i wish tumblr had more of a “educate the ignorant” attitude as opposed to “send death threats to the ignorant”

i love how this post was made by a cis white boy

I like how you completely ignored the message and instead focused on who posted it. :)

Anonymous asked: Since you reblogged that post about rape culture and disabilities that mentions deaf people, I just wanted to let you know that a lot of deaf and hard of hearing people don't consider themselves disabled. It depends on the person and their experiences, but talking about deaf people as disabled can be considered offensive and harmful. Audism is a good thing to google if you want to research it. Just for future reference. :)

Huh interesting, thanks!

Finally I can put my (almost (I’m 3 credits short)) Deaf Culture Studies minor to use on Tumblr!

This is true. A lot of Deaf people don’t like being called disabled. One reason is a lot of hearing people associate hearing as a fundamental part of communication and Deaf people can communicate just fine with ASL or whatever sign language they use. Deaf people can do pretty much everything that hearing people can do and (unsurprisingly) do some things better. Did you know Deaf and Hard of Hering (HoH) people get in less car accidents than hearing people per capita?

Some Deaf people prefer being called differently abled but some don’t because for a number of reasons so ask before you use that term as well.

The best thing to do is called Deaf people deaf (or whatever they prefer if they are okay with disabled or differently abled) and not treat them like they can’t possibly understand them just because they can’t hear you perfectly. Never yell or talk slowly either because that typically makes it harder for those who read lips to understand you.

Also, capital D Deaf is a cultural identity and lowercase d deaf is just a statement on one’s hearing ability. Lots of HoH people identify as Deaf and some people that are completely deaf don’t identify as Deaf, especially if they have hearing aides or cochlear implants.
